Water is essential to the human body, making up 60% of our total body weight. It plays a vital role in maintaining bodily functions such as regulating body temperature, aiding digestion, and transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout the body.
When we don’t drink enough water, our bodies become dehydrated which can lead to fatigue, headaches, confusion and even long-term health problems such as kidney stones or urinary tract infections. Drinking adequate amounts of water each day can improve overall wellbeing by promoting healthy skin and hair, boosting energy levels and improving brain function. Water also helps flush out toxins from the body which can have a positive impact on mental health.
The amount of water an individual needs depends on several factors including age, gender, activity level, climate and overall health status. However it’s generally recommended that adults aim for eight glasses (or about two liters) per day.
In addition to plain old H2O, adding fruits and vegetables to your diet can also help to improve your hydration levels. Fruits and vegetables are high in water content which means they help to fill up your stomach and intestines quickly, leading to a feeling of fullness and reduced hunger.
